The Inside Scoop on the Watergate Scandal

The Inside Scoop on the Watergate Scandal The Watergate embarrassment was a vital crossroads in American legislative issues and drove the acquiescence of President Richard Nixon and the prosecutions of a few of his consultants. The Watergate embarrassment was likewise a turning point for how reporting was drilled in the United States. The outrage takes its name from the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. The Watergate inn was the site of a June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee home office. Five men were captured and prosecuted for breaking and entering: Virgilio Gonzlez, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martã nez and Frank Sturgis. Two other men attached to Nixon, E. Howard Hunt, Jr. what's more, G. Gordon Liddy, were hit with intrigue, robbery, and infringement of government wiretapping laws. Every one of the seven men were either straightforwardly or by implication utilized by Nixons Committee to Re-choose the President (CRP, now and again alluded to as CREEP). The five were attempted and sentenced in January 1973.The prosecutions happened as Nixon was running for re-appointment in 1972. He crushed Democratic rival George McGovern. Nixon was sure to be arraigned and sentenced in 1974, however the 37th leader of the United States surrendered before he was to confront indictment. Subtleties of the Watergate Scandal Examinations by the FBI, the Senate Watergate Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and the press (explicitly Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post) uncovered the break-in was one of a few criminal operations approved and completed by Nixons staff. These criminal operations included crusade extortion, political undercover work and damage, unlawful break-ins, ill-advised duty reviews, illicit wiretapping, and a washed slush support used to pay the individuals who led these operations.Washington Post journalists Woodward and Bernstein depended on unknown sources as their examination uncovered that information on the break-in and its to conceal ventured into the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and the White House. Be that as it may, every one of the three systems conveyed the almost 30 hours of declaration by previous White House counsel John Dean. After two years of examinations, proof ensnaring Nixon and his staff developed, including the presence of a copying framework in Nixons office. In October 1973, Nixon terminated unique investigator Cox after he summoned the tapes. This demonstration incited the renunciations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. The press named this the Saturday Night Massacre. In February 1974, the U.S. Place of Representatives approved the House Judiciary Committee to examine whether adequate grounds existed to reprimand Nixon. Three articles of prosecution were endorsed by the Committee, suggesting that the House start formal denunciation procedures against President Richard M. Nixon. Unconditional offers on the rise what it means

Unconditional offers on the rise what it means Unconditional offers on the rise: what it means In 2017, there was a steep rise in the number of unconditional offers made by universities to A Level students. As many as 40% more unconditional offers were issued by universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland than in 2016, leading to an outcry in some quarters at the suggestion that such offers are undermining the integrity of the A Level system. But are these claims warranted? We take a look. What are unconditional offers? Students in the UK apply to universities via the centralised Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) system, and university departments then give offers of places on their courses through the system. The vast majority of these offers are conditional on the applicant attaining a minimum set of grades in their A Level exams, for example a B and two Cs. But universities can also issue unconditional offers, which don’t specify any minimum A Level requirements at all. Why universities issue unconditional offers Universities tend to issue unconditional offers to students they really want to attract to their courses. They anticipate that other universities competing for the same students will hand these students conditional offers, and they hope that by promising applicants a stress-free ride through the end of their A Level studies, they can tempt students into accepting their offer. Remember that offers issues and accepted through the UCAS system are binding on both institution and student, so a student who accepts an unconditional offer “to be safe” commits to attending that institution, even if their results are better than they expected. This practice can backfire on an institution, however: it’s not uncommon for students to pick a challenging conditional offer as their first choice, and to take up the unconditional offer as an insurance choice, to ensure they’re able to attend a good university and avoid the stress of the Clearing process even if their A Levels go disastrously wrong! Why are unconditional offers suddenly in the news? There’s nothing new about the practice of issuing unconditional offers. What is remarkable, however, is the steep rise in the number of unconditional offers issued to applicants, and the type of students to whom these offers are made. Traditionally unconditional offers were used primarily to take the exam pressure off otherwise very high-performing students â€" those estimated AAA or AAB at A Level, for example. These were students with a proven track record of excellence who could be virtually guaranteed to thrive in a university environment even if they underperformed at A Level. Unconditional offers are now being issued much more freely to students estimated to score in the B to C range in their A Level exams, sparking accusations that universities are undermining the A Level “gold standard” to put more bums on lecture hall seats. Why the change? And are A Levels really being “undermined”? If one were being uncharitable, one might suggest that universities were simply seeking to compensate for reforms in A Level exams that have supposedly made them more rigorous and challenging, and ensuring that their admissions don’t fall as a result. If this were indeed the case, you could probably argue that universities were indeed undermining efforts to ensure the rigour of A Levels. But the story behind the A Level reforms isn’t that simple. It’s not just that A Levels have been made more rigorous but that they’ve been refocused on final, end-of-course exams. This reverses a longstanding trend towards modular, coursework-based approaches to assessment that are more inclusive and favour students with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, or those who simply find exams stressful. In many ways, A Levels have been recalibrated not to test knowledge or academic ability but to test the ability to take exams. Since most universities use modular and coursework-based assessment systems there’s a case to be made that a student’s estimated grades â€" supplied by teachers who evaluate their performance regularly â€" is of greater value in determining that student’s likely university performance than their final A Level marks. What seems clear from the recent trends is that universities are basing their admissions procedures on whether they think a given applicant can thrive on their courses rather than on their final A Level exam results. Whether that technically involves undermining the A Level system or not probably depends on your perspective, but we can probably expect to see more unconditional offers issued in the future. Movie Summary Django Unchained Essay Example For Students

Movie Summary Django Unchained Essay Django Unchained is a movie that takes place in the times of slavery where the blacks have to fight, entertain, and work at the pleasure of the white supremacist. Jamie Foxx played the heroic character and in my opinion did a miraculous and stupendous job. He gives the sense, â€Å"there is still hope. † The former-slave teamed up with a German Bounty hunter in order to free his wife from a tyrannical plantation owner, Leonardo DiCaprio. This leads to a humongous and heightened stand off at the end of the movie, this is the scene that I will be focusing on for my depiction, which I believes tells a lot about each character. Listen closely for the addition of the music as well. The music is used to enhance the scene, give it more character and uniqueness. Whether the sound added is diegetic or non-diegetic. In this scene the addition of music does not determine whether it is diegetic in entirely, the other surrounding sounds used in the scene, whether introduced as a suspenseful sound or the sounds being produced are visible within the shot determines it. The scenes start off as Django and the white supremacist leader finally confronting each other about the actions that have just taken place. The German Bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz speaks in pro for his slaves and wants better, he no longer agrees with the ways of the plantation owner. The famous gun battle commences as he shoots him in the chest. Quentin has an eye or gory bloody action, and he did not fall up short when creating this shootout. The shootout follows to the center hallway of the house, shot as shot, one by one, and the villain’s fall. Django is fighting for his fellow friends as well as his own life at this point. You will notice that most of this scene introduces no outside music. Quentin wants the audience to understand the horror and realness of what is happening. He really enhances the pain and visuals of the villain’s because he wants to show them the same hatred that the slaves had to face for many years. This is where the scene really kicks into gear; as Django comes around the corner music begins to play as the timeframe of the shot slows down to make it more heroic and suspenseful. pac- the payback/untouchable makes Django seem like a badass. The point-of-view shot from the barrel of the gun as he rack- focuses on the gun to basically tell you this is going to turn bad, quickly. The only non-diegetic sound added in was as the camera pans from left to right to follow the gun shot through the body of the bad guy as it makes contact with wall and centerpiece on the table; the addition of a high pitched sound is created to give the sense that a bullet deflected off it. From this point on, the scene is in slow motion, to continue that same feeling of heroic and suspense. The sound of Jamie Foxx’s voice is used as a voice over; this is the turning point where he no longer has control. The scene commences at this point when he is taken hostage, until he later breaks free. For the music used, you cannot really determine whether a diatonic scale was used in entirety because the octaves are steadily constant throughout to give the same feeling of action and suspense. The setting and quality of light produced in the scene is also another factor that creates the dark and ominous feel as well. Overall, this movie was a thrill to watch and I always enjoy depicting and reviewing a Quentin Tarantino film. He puts it into perspective of the literal meanings to hatred, racism, and overall traitorous qualities. I really enjoyed this film, and covered multiple aspects to Tarantino’s reasoning’s for his decisions to how and why he directed it the way he has; really well done.

Powers Of Ched Essays - Higher Education In The Philippines

Powers Of Ched I. Introduction Under Article XIV of the Constitution of the Philippines specifically under Sec. 1 states that The State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all. This means that every citizen whether at Level 1, 2 or 3 shall be entitled to quality education and that the government should take actions to ensure that this right from the constitution that is granted to the citizen will not be infringed and that quality education will be provided and accessible to all. To ensure that quality education is given to the citizens of the Philippines, the government had vested its powers to different administrative agency to make sure that this right granted to the citizens will not be infringed. The Department of Education for Culture and Sports (DECS) is an example of an administrative agency that was created to ensure that quality education is given to the citizens at all levels. In 1994, the commission on Higher Education (CHED) was created to govern mainly the higher education or otherwise known as the tertiary education. The Commission is a body independent and separate from the DECS, and attached to the Office of the President for administrative purposes only. Its coverage shall be both public and private institutions of higher education as well as degree-granting programs in all post secondary educational institutions, public and private. As a Commission created to govern the higher education, it follows the mission of gearing higher education towards the pursuit of better quality of life for all Filipinos by emphasizing the acquisition of knowledge and formation of those skills necessary to make individual a productive member of society. It shall accelerate the development of high-level professionals who will search for new knowledge, and provide leadership in the various disciplines required by a dynamic and self assuring economy. In short, the mission of the CHED is what is stated in Sec. 1 of Article XIV of the constitution, which is to provide quality education to the citizens and make education accessible to the citizens. In Sec. 2 of RA 7722, the same is mentioned. The state shall protect, foster, promote the right of all citizens to affordable quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to ensure that education shall be accessible to all. The State shall likewise ensure and protect academic freedom and shall promote its exercise and observance for the continuing intellectual growth, the advancement of learning and research, the development of responsible and effective leadership, the education of high-level and middle-level professionals and the enrichment of our historical and cultural heritage. State-supported institutions of higher learning shall gear their programs to national, regional or local development plans. Finally, all institutions of higher learning shall exemplify through their physical and natural surrounding the dignity and beauty of as well as their pride in, the intellectual and scholarly life. In short, the main mission or goal of the CHED is what is stated in Sec 1 of Article XIV of the constitution, which is to provide quality education to the public and to ensure its accessibility to all. Moreover, to achieve Sec. 2 of RA 7722, which is to ensure quality and accessible education, powers are granted to the CHED. Some powers which are obtained transitory from the DECS, meaning the powers of DECS in governing tertiary education are transferred to the CHED. This is in Sec. 18 of RA 7722. Such personnel, properties, assets and liabilities, functions and responsibilities of the Bureau of Higher education, including those for higher and tertiary education and degree-granting vocational and technical programs in the regional offices, under the DECS and other government entities having function similar to those of the Commission are herby transferred to the Commission. From this it is established that the powers that were once granted to DECS in governing the tertiary education are hereby transferred to the CHED. To ensure accessibility of education, one of the most prominent factor will be the tuition fee. The rate at which the tuition fee is established will determine the accessibility of the school, thereby to ensure accessibility for students, tuitions fees should be regulated

Article Summary about acqusition and consolidation Term Paper

Article Summary about acqusition and consolidation - Term Paper Example Acquisition aims at building on strong point or weak point of the subsidiary or parent company. The acquisition can be retained or discarded depending on the performance. An evaluation on processes and how they are performing is done, and a decision is made. Consolidation is the process of combining the financial statements of a parent company as consolidated financial statements. It is necessary for the parent company which is independent to control the subsidiary which is not independent through financial operations. This is shown when financial operations of the parent company are consolidated to the subsidiary in a financial statement. The purpose of an acquisition is for it to be successful by achieving more rapidly and gainful growth than ordinary. This can only be seen if a detailed consolidated financial statement is outlined. The article on Google acquiring Buffer-Box http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57556528-93/google-acquires-bufferbox-provider-of-delivery-lockers/ will be the case study. Google is a multinational company which provides internet-related products and services. While, Buffer-Box is an on-line pick up site for goods and services bought online. Most e-commerce operations for Google are in Waterloo which is where most of its online shopping functions are assembled. Therefore, by acquiring Buffer-Box Google will add to its mobile shopping sector. Buffer-Box, on the other hand, fights the challenge of low customer base and gets to leverage Google’s resources to grow their business. In preparing a consolidated financial statement for the parenting company, Google and the subsidiary Buffer-Box, needs to gather the necessary paper work on cash, accounts payable and inventory. In order to avoid double-counting when making journal entries, Google should not include transactions to the subsidiary. The statement should reflect incorporated cash flow showing sales, opening and closing

Business formation and purpose Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Business formation and purpose - Essay Example BBC Worldwide has a number of other commercial ventures. Profits from these activities are returned to the BBC for investment in new programming and services (BBC, No Date). In the year 1922 by the public opinion, as well as the spectacular growth and popularity of radio in the United States, had attracted more public pressure on the authorities to deny a full service any longer. After five months of deliberation a company to be known as the British Broadcasting Company was to set up eight stations in major cities around the country. Like this the BBC was born. on November 14th 1922, The British Broadcasting Company started daily transmissions by that time more than one million ten-shilling (50p) authorization had been announced. In 1927 the company was restructured as a public corporation -the BBC which is known today- by its founding father, John (later Lord) Reith, but by this time an even newer technology was being developed -television. In 1926 Baird enlisted the aid of Selfridges in London to put on public demonstrations of his equipment., the BBCs official line was that Bairds pictures were well below standard and that they had too little potential for improvement (BBC, No Date). By 1932 the BBC started regular experimental broadcasting. They offered Baird a studio in their newly acquired premises in Portland Place, Britains first dedicated television studio, was housed in the basement of Broadcasting House, and it was from here that Baird continued to experiment and refine the new medium. Competition came from the Electronic and Music Industries (EMI), based in Hayes, Middlesex, where they had been working with the Marconi Company on developing a high definition system. In May of 1934 the British government appointed a committee for setting up a television service followed by the Seldom Report where The BBC was to be

Timolol Maleate 0.5% Eye Drop Preparation

Timolol Maleate 0.5% Eye Drop Preparation Formulation of eye drops (TIMOLOL MALEATE 0.5% m/V EYE DROPS) By: Introduction The Timolol Maleate 0.5% M/V Eye Drops is indicated for the reduction the intraocular pressure in the (IOP) persons suffering from ocular hypertension or glaucoma they are insufficiently responsive to the topical Beta Blockers. It is shown to reduce IOP in patients that have chronic open-angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and in Aphakic patients with signs of glaucoma and in those patients who wear contact classes (Siegal, 2007). It also shows a reduction of IOP in patients having narrow angles and those with iatrogenically-induced narrow angle closures. The inactive ingredients or excipients in Timolol sodium hydroxide used for pH adjustment, monobasic and dibasic sodium phosphates, and purified water. Purified water is used for injection purposes. 0.01% Benzalkonium chloride is used as a preservative. The preservative is a quaternary ammonium. Its mechanism of action involves the intrinsic detergent processes that result in the dissolution of the bacterial membranes and cell walls, thus preserving the medicine (Wang et al., 2012). It is particularly focused on the preservation against gram-positive bacteria. The aim of this project is to prepare a Timolol maleate 0.5% eye drop using the sterilization method. The autoclave sterilization method is based on the WHO standard. Methods Alcohol wipes were used to initially clean the top panel of the laminar flow cabinet. The direction of cleaning was from back to front (from one corner towards the airflow direction). It was wiped twice while ensuring that the wiping stripes overlapped. It was disinfected until the top panel. Then, starting from one side of the panels, it was disinfected until the bottom of the panel. The processes were repeated until all the side panels and bottom panels were adequately disinfected. The production sheet record was filled and completed before the start of the experiment. 50 ml of Timolol maleate was weighed; Disodium Hydrogen Orthophosphate and Dihydrogen Sodium Phosphate were also weighed and put in separate test tubes. Centrimide 0.5% Stock Solution was added to half of distilled water in a beaker. The mixture was stirred gently. Disodium Hydrogen Orthophosphate and Dihydrogen Sodium Phosphate were added to the mixture and stirred to dissolve. Timolol maleate was added to the mixture and stirred to dissolve. Freshly distilled water was added to the solution to make up to the final volume. Sintered glass filter method was used. The filtrate was put into the beaker. It was then poured into pre-sterilized bottles. The filtrate was filled up to the bottle shoulder. The dropper was inserted into the bottles, and caps screwed tightly by hand (WHO, 2002). Autoclave sterilization was carried out on the solution at 121-124 oC. The process was carried out for 15 minutes at approximately 200 kPa or 1 atmosphere above the atmospheric pressure. The solution was viewed and labelled after sterilization and cooling of the solution. Results Table 1: Microbiological methods Table: 2. Environmental monitoring Settle Plates should be accurately positioned in the Laminar Flow Cabinet by placing one settle plate for each corner. That is, one should be placed to the back left, one to the back right, one to the front left and one to the front right. A minimum of 10 cm gap should be left between the settle plates and the walls of the cabinet. Figure: 1. Autoclave controls before sterilization Figure: 2. Results after sterilization Discussion As shown in figure 2, the autoclave turned black after the sterilization process. This shows that it was sterilized. The Sterikon ® Plus indicators have nutrient broth made up of sugar, spores of a pathogenic bacillus stearothermophilus and a pH indicator. When the sterilization process is carried out, the ampules in the indicator retain the red-violet color. On the other hand, if sterilization does not take place, then bacterial growth occurs. This leads to ampules becoming turbid and changing color to yellow (Block, 2001). The manufacturing processes are valid and the cleanliness levels achieved throughout the sterilization process. From table 1, there was growth in aerobic tests in a nutrient broth medium and fungal tests in a Yeast dextrose broth medium. This indicates that the conditions were favorable for growth. The anaerobic control and fungal control also indicated growth under Robertson’s cooked meat medium and Yeast dextrose broth media respectively. From table 2, there was no growth all the settle plates placed in different positions. The sterilization process is a reliable approach because high temperatures are achieved through steam under pressure mechanisms. The moist heat reaches temperatures above the boiling point, thus achieving effective sterilization. This approach is the best because pressurized steam destroys all forms of life and bacterial spores (Mazhar, 2009). References Block, SS 2001, Disinfection, Sterilization, and Preservation. The Stupidest Angel Chapter 20

Chapter 20 WINGING IT The angel had opened six envelopes of powdered hot-chocolate mix and handpicked out all the minimarshmallows. â€Å"They trap them in these little prisons with the brown powder. You must free them to put them in the cup,† the angel explained, tearing open another packet, pouring the contents into a bowl, picking up the little marshmallows, and dropping them into his mug. â€Å"Kill him while he's counting the marshmallows,† said the Narrator. â€Å"He's a mutant. No angel could be that stupid. Kill him, you crazy bitch, he's the enemy.† â€Å"Nuh-uh,† said Raziel, into his marshmallow foam. Molly looked at him over the rim of her mug. By the candlelight in the kitchen, he certainly was a striking fellow – those sharp features, the lineless face, the hair, and now the chocolate-marshmallow mustache. Not to mention the intermittent glowing in the dark, which had been helpful when she was looking for some matches to light the candles. â€Å"You can hear the voice in my head?† she asked. â€Å"Yes. And in my head.† â€Å"I'm not religious,† Molly said. Under the table, she held the tashi with her free hand, its blade resting across her bare thighs. â€Å"Oh, me either,† said the angel. â€Å"I mean, I'm not religious, so why are you here?† â€Å"Lunatics. We're attracted to them. It has something to do with the mechanics of faith. I don't really understand it. Do you have any more?† He held up the empty cocoa envelope. His mug was overflowing with melted marshmallow foam. â€Å"No, that's the whole box. So you're attracted to me because I'm loony and will believe anything?† â€Å"Yes, I think so. And because no one will believe you. So there's no violation of faith.† â€Å"Right.† â€Å"But you are attractive in other ways, too,† added the angel quickly, as if someone had suddenly smacked him in the head with a sock full of people skills. â€Å"I like your sword and those.† â€Å"My breasts?† It wasn't the first time that someone had said that sort of thing to her, but it was the first time it had come from a messenger of God. â€Å"Yes. Zoe has those. She's an archangel like me. Well, not like me. She has those.† â€Å"Uh-huh. So there are female angels as well?† â€Å"Oh yes. Not always. Everyone was changed after you happened.† â€Å"Me?† â€Å"Man. Mankind. Women. You. Before we were all one kind. But then you happened, and we were divided up and given parts. Some got those, others got other things. I don't know why.† â€Å"So you have parts?† â€Å"Would you like to see?† â€Å"Wings?† Molly asked. She actually wouldn't mind seeing his wings, if he had them. â€Å"No, we all have those. I mean my special parts. Would you like to see?† He stood and reached down the front of his pants. It wasn't the first time she'd had an offer like that, but it was the first time it had come from a messenger of God. â€Å"No, that's okay.† She grabbed his forearm and guided him back into his seat. â€Å"Okay, then. I should go. I have to check on the miracle and then go home.† â€Å"The miracle?† â€Å"A Christmas miracle That's why I'm here. Oh look, you have a scar on one of them » â€Å"He has the attention span of a hummingbird,† the Narrator hissed â€Å"Put him out of his misery â€Å" The angel was pointing to the jagged five-inch scar above Molly's left breast, the one she'd gotten when a stunt went wrong while filming Mechanized Death Warrior Babe VII. The injury that had gotten her fired, the scar that had ended her career as a B-movie action heroine. â€Å"Does it hurt?† asked the angel â€Å"Not anymore,† Molly said â€Å"Can I touch?† It wasn't the first time that someone had asked, but – well, you know. â€Å"Okay,† she said. His fingers were long and fine, his fingernails a little too long for a guy, she thought, but his touch was warm and radiated from her breast through her whole body When he pulled his hand away, he said, â€Å"Better?† She touched where he had touched It was smooth. Completely smooth. The scar was gone. The angel blurred in her vision as tears welled up in her eyes. â€Å"You complete shit bag of sentimental saccharine,† said the Narrator â€Å"Thank you,† Molly said, with a hint of a sniffle â€Å"I didn't know you could –  » â€Å"I'm good with weather,† said the angel. â€Å"Idiot!† the Narrator said â€Å"I have to go now,† said Raziel, rising from his chair â€Å"I have to go to the church to see if the miracle has worked » Molly led him through the living room to the front door. She held the door for him. Even so, the wind whipped his coat around him and she could see the white tips of his wings below. She smiled, laughing and crying at the same time. â€Å"Bye,† the angel said. He walked away into the woods. As Molly closed the door, something dark flew through it. The candles in the living room had blown out, so all she could see was a shadow flying through the house, disappearing into the kitchen. She got the door shut and trod into the kitchen, holding her sword at a low ready. By the candlelight in the kitchen, she could see the shadow over the kitchen window, two eyes shining orange back there in the dark. She picked up a candle from the table and moved toward the window until the shadow cast shadows of its own. It was some kind of animal, hanging from the shutter over the sink, looking like a black towel with a little doggy face. It didn't seem dangerous, just, well, a little goofy. â€Å"Well, this is it I am getting back on my meds tomorrow, if I have to borrow the money from Lena » â€Å"Not so fast,† said the Narrator. â€Å"It'll be so lonely in here when I'm gone. And you'll be back to wearing your normal clothes. Jeans and sweaters, you can't want that.† Ignoring the Narrator, Molly approached the creature on the shutters until she was only two feet away and staring right into its eyes. â€Å"Angels are one thing, but I don't even know what in the hell you are, little guy.† â€Å"Fruit bat,† said Roberto. â€Å"He might be a Spaniard,† said the Narrator. â€Å"Did you hear the accent?† â€Å"I'm going out there,† Theo Crowe said, finding a grip on the Christmas tree. â€Å"He still has one bullet,† said Tucker Case. â€Å"They are going to torch the place. I've got to get out there.† â€Å"To do what? You going to take their matches away?† Lena took Theo by the arm. â€Å"Theo, they'll never get a fire started in this rain and wind. Don't go out there. Ben didn't make it two steps.† â€Å"If I can get to an SUV, I can start running over people,† Theo said. â€Å"Val gave me the keys to her Range Rover.† â€Å"Well, that's not going to work,† said Tuck. â€Å"There's a bunch of them. You might get some of the feeble ones, but the rest will just run into the woods where you can't get to them.† â€Å"Fine. Suggestions? This place will burn like tinder, rain or no rain. If I don't do something we're going to get roasted.† Lena looked at Tuck. â€Å"Maybe Theo's right. If he can drive them into the woods, maybe the rest of us can make a break for the parking lot. They can't get all of us.† â€Å"Fine,† Theo said. â€Å"Divide people up into groups of five and six. Give the strongest member of each group the key to an SUV. Make sure everyone knows where they're going once they get out the door. When you hear the horn on the Range Rover play ‘Shave and a Haircut, it will mean I've done what I can do. Everyone make a break for it.† â€Å"Wow, you came up with that while stoned,† Tuck said. â€Å"I'm impressed.† â€Å"Just get everyone ready. I'm not going out on that roof until I'm sure no one is waiting for me.† â€Å"What if we hear a gunshot? What if they get you before you get to the car?† Theo pulled a key out of his pocket and handed it to Tuck. â€Å"Then it would be your turn, wouldn't it? Val had her spare car key with her, too.† â€Å"Wait a minute. I'm not running out there. You have an excuse, you're stoned, you're a cop, your wife threw you out, and your life is in shreds. Things are going good for me.† â€Å"When Constable Crowe leaves, then can we cut off his head?† asked Joshua Barker. â€Å"Okay, maybe not,† said Tuck. â€Å"I'm going,† Theo said. â€Å"Get everyone ready at the door.† The lanky constable made his way up the Christmas tree. Tuck watched him climb out on the roof, then turned to the others. â€Å"Okay, you guys heard him. Let's break into groups of five and six by the front doors. Nacho, grab the hammer, we're going to have to pull the nails on the reinforcements. Who's driving an SUV?† Everyone but the children raised their hands. â€Å"It won't spark, it's wet,† said Marty in the Morning. He was trying to coax fire out of a drenched disposable lighter. The undead stood around him, looking at the pile of gasoline-sodden debris they'd piled against the side of the chapel. â€Å"I love barbecue,† said Arthur Tannbeau. â€Å"Every Sunday out at the ranch, we used to –  » â€Å"Only in California could one refer to a citrus farm as a ranch,† interrupted Malcolm Cowley. â€Å"As if you and the yahoos would all go out on horseback to round up the tangerines.† â€Å"Didn't anyone find a dry lighter or matches in any of the cars?† Dale Pearson said. â€Å"No one smokes anymore,† said Bess Leander. â€Å"Disgusting filthy habit anyway.† â€Å"Said the woman who still has brain matter on her chin from that fellow in the sweater,† said Malcolm. Bess smiled coyly, most of her gums visible through her receded lips. â€Å"They were so tasty – it was like he'd never used them.† There was a chirp from the front of the chapel and all of them looked. Yellow lights flashed on one of the vehicles up there. â€Å"Someone's making a break for it,† screamed Dale. â€Å"I thought I told you to keep an eye on the roof.† â€Å"I did,† said the one-armed Jimmy Antalvo. â€Å"It's dark. I can't see shit.† As they rushed down the side of the chapel toward the front, they saw a dark shadow slide off the side of the roof to the ground.
